Armas wins season debut as Mets down Cardinals 7-4 (AP)

New York Mets' Billy Wagner pitches in the ninth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals in  a MLB baseball game, Tuesday, July 1, 2008 in St. Louis. The Mets beat the Cardinals 7-4.

Tony Armas showed the New York Mets enough that they should consider keeping him around, and backup catcher Ramon Castro made his bid for more playing time. Armas won his season debut after a minor league callup and Castro, the eighth-place hitter, had two hits and three RBIs in a 7-4 victory over the St.

Glaus hits winning homer in ninth for Cards (AP)

With one day left in May, Troy Glaus had a measly two homers. He’s been back on his power profile since. Glaus’ second homer of the game and 13th of the year with two outs in the ninth was the decisive blow, an inning after pinch-hitter Chris Duncan’s two-run shot tied it in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 8-7 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night.

Mets call up Armas to make Tuesday start (AP)

The New York Mets purchased the contract of right-hander Tony Armas from Triple-A New Orleans on Monday night with plans to plug him into a rotation opening on Tuesday. The Mets needed an extra arm after playing a two-ballpark doubleheader against the Yankees on Friday. Mike Pelfrey was next in the rotation but he would’ve been pitching on three days’ rest, so the Mets opted to go with 13 pitchers…

Mets keep Pedro Martinez on regular rest (AP)

New York Mets interim manager Jerry Manuel wants Pedro Martinez to get into a groove, so he’s keeping him on regular rest Wednesday while giving younger Mike Pelfrey an extra day. Martinez and Pelfrey both pitched in a doubleheader on Friday against the Yankees, and Manuel said he hoped consistent action would help Martinez.

Mets activate OF Church from DL, put Nixon on DL (AP)

Outfielder Ryan Church returned from the disabled list Sunday and was put right into the New York Mets’ starting lineup against the New York Yankees. Church had not played since June 6 because of the effects of his second concussion this year. He was activated from the disabled list and recently acquired outfielder Trot Nixon went on the 15-day DL with a strained groin.
